Service and Relief Efforts for Victims of Hurricane Sandy

When a hurricane slammed into the Eastern seaboard on Monday, October 29, incredibly high winds, rain, flooding and snow left millions of people without power for more than a week and brought mass transportation to a complete halt. But none of these obstacles kept HD Supply associates across the country from braving the elements to serve their customers.

The unprecedented “perfect storm” known as Superstorm Sandy left devastation across the country, tearing apart homes and historic landmarks and shutting down major financial institutions and commerce.

Among the hardest hit areas of New York and New Jersey, a small group of HD Supply Facilities Maintenance warehouse associates found ways to make it to work and deliver for their customers. National Account Manager Peter Blais took the lead in getting tens of thousands of dollars worth of pumps and generators to their customers in need. “Anytime you see as much devastation as what happened, it’s a great feeling to be able to help our customers and the community,” said Blais.

Blais worked with HD Supply White Cap in Hyattsville, Md. to secure the generators. “Many of our customers don’t have a White Cap account, so we made it easy for them to buy from White Cap using their Facilities Maintenance accounts,” he said. The day after Hurricane Sandy hit, two of Facilities Maintenance’s local dedicated drivers, Kendall Parker and Mike Minniti, braved the elements to make deliveries to customers. The Facilities Maintenance team also placed orders for nearly $20,000 worth of glow-sticks as emergency light sources for those customers without electricity.
